Let's face it, times have been better. There are several major issues in the world today, but the most serious perhaps are the coronavirus pandemic and societal oppression based on, among other things, race and gender. While many may view these as mutually exclusive , there is actually a great deal of intersectionality between the two, as communities of color are more likely to be affected by COVID-19, and, in turn, the virus perpetuates unfair disparities between groups. But we have the power to make a difference.
Soccer is the world’s most popular sport by far, with millions, if not billions, of players and fans worldwide. Right now, you are probably wondering, “What does this have to do with solving society’s most pressing issues ?” Well, by utilizing the power and popularity of the greatest sport on Earth, we can raise money and awareness.
As almost anyone who has ever played soccer can attest, juggling is an extremely important ball control exercise, which is fun for all to try and can be improved by simply practicing. Juggling is keeping the ball in the air for as long as possible using your head, chest, thighs and/or feet to keep the ball aloft. You count each time the ball touches a body part. Remember, this is soccer, so no hands are allowed!
This fundraiser is, in essence, a walk-a-thon, but instead of walking, you will be juggling a soccer ball and getting your friends and family to support you with pledges for donations and/or to try juggling themselves.
We are juggling for Get Us PPE, dedicated to “get Personal Protective Equipment to those who need it most.” Get US PPE supports communities disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 and their efforts to keep those who peacefully demonstrate on behalf of social justice causes by providing them masks, gloves, and other protective equipment.. 100% of your donation goes to Get Us PPE!
It just takes four easy steps:
1. Decide how much money you will donate per juggle. I recommend:
· Advanced players: 1 cent to 10 cents per juggle
· Intermediate players: 10 cents to $1.00 per juggle
· Beginners: $1.00 or more per juggle
2. Perform as many juggles as you can consecutively without dropping the ball.
3. Donate. Multiply the number of juggles you performed by the amount you are donating per juggle. (e.g. 50 juggles x $0.10 = $5.00). Tell us how you did in the “comment” section!
4. Spread the word. Invite teammates, family members, friends, etc., to juggle themselves or donate on behalf of your efforts. Only together will we make a impact!
Not only will you be raising money for an amazing organization that is committed to making an impact, but, as an added bonus, you will be improving your soccer skills and gaining bragging rights over your friends. So start juggling!
When I came up with this fundraising idea, my most important objectives were to find an organization that addressed not only the needs of communities hit hard by the pandemic, but also one that addresses social justice issues as well. After a lot of research and asking around, I found Get Us PPE. Started in March of 2020, this new non-profit organization specializes in getting personal protective equipment (PPE) to healthcare workers in economically disadvantaged areas that are hit hardest by the pandemic. They have created their own algorithm to factor in socio-economic standing to ensure their supply chain distribution prioritizes those who need it the most. They proactively seek out areas of need by calling facilities and shelters that may not have the ability to request equipment. They also have supported peaceful protestors in this time of social strife using their grass roots network of regional affiliates to make masks and PPE’s available so people can safely participate and share their opinions on social issues.
